"The Tin Man Does It With Heart"
Copper Cookware:
With over 40 years of experience at Oregon Retinners our expert "tin man" services all copper cookware by hand. First the pans are stripped of the old tin and cleaned. Next, the pans are hand wiped with grade “A” tin. Hand wiping the tin gives it a heavier finish then electro-plating, plus it does leave a swirl in the tin. This is a natural characteristic of hand tinning and will not affect the use of the pan. After the pans are tinned they are polished to give a deep luster. At this point your pans will cook evenly and efficiently, in addition to looking great on the stove or counter top.
Polishing:
Polishing is a service we provide either using hand rubbing or machine polishing. As you can see our products vary as our customers do. Give us a call and we would be happy to discuss options and pricing
Electro plate:
By definition the word Electroplate means "any artifact that has been plated with a thin coat of metal by electrolysis". The most popular use for electroplating at Oregon Retinners are tea pots. We are able electroplate the inside of the tea pots without damage the exterior.
Wire Whips:
Wire whips are first checked for broken, loose, or worn wires. They are replaced and each whip is stripped of all grime, grease, and so forth. The whip is then tinned with grade “A” tin and cleaned once again. The shaft is carefully cleaned to insure a perfect fit. Then the gasket is replaced and the whip is as good as new!
Mixing Bowls:
Each item is inspected and straightened. If dents are present they will be removed. It's expertly cleaned to remove rust, scale, grease, and so forth. When you send us your bowls it is not necessary to pre-clean them. Repairs that require an extra cost will only be made with pre-approval first.
Grade “A” tin is applied by a hot-dip method to insure performance equal to like-new.
Refrigerator Racks:
Reach-in racks are chemically stripped and then tinned with grade “A” tin to insure performance of new.
Meat Grinders:
Meat grinders come in sizes from your hand crank unit that attaches to your cutting board to the commercial grade ones that are used in the meat packing houses. At Oregon Retinners we can do your smallest to largest of grinders. All grinders are chemically stripped and cleaned. The grinder is then submerged in molten grade “A” tin. This process is approved by the FDA.
Splash Rings:
Splash Rings or "Bowl Extenders" are used to keep the product in the mixing bowl where it belongs. When it's time for your mixing bowl to be tinned it is usually time for your splash ring to be serviced as well . Before we tin your splash ring we shape it to insure a proper fit to your bowl. Please remember when washing your mixing bowl the splash ring needs to be removed and washed separately. This will protect the life and working efficiency.
Milk Cans:
After 86 years we continue to serve the public by retinning milks can! Now a days milk cans are mainly decorative compared to the important role they once played. The milk cans are chemically stripped to remove all rust and grime; please do NOT sandblast the cans first. Then the milk cans are submerged in molten grade “A” tin to restore your milk can to its original condition. If you choose to use the milk can to hold fluids, it is soldered to repair any holes and the seams are soldered to prevent leaking. Please let us know and we will be sure to provide you with the correct service
Gas Tanks:
Yes! We can even restore your gas tank. Depending upon the grime in your tank we will either chemically strip your tank or have it striped through Action Metal Refinishing at no additional cost to you. Then the entire tank is submerged in molten tin so the inside and outside is completely covered. We will then solder the tank for any holes that might have developed with rust removal. If you have a filler neck we will tin it and solder it back on to the tank. This is the best way to restore your tank back to original.
Caring for Cookware
1) Because copper is such a good conductor of heat, you should always use low to medium
heat, this is equivalent to medium or high heat.
2) Never put an empty pan on a burner, always have something in the pan first.
3) Never use metal utensils in a copper pan, use nylon or wood only.
4) Copper pans should always be washed by hand and never put in a dishwasher. Use a
nylon covered sponge and a dish soap that is non-abrasive.
5) Try to cook acidic product in another pan then versus a tin lined. Example tomato sauce
is high in acid. We use
acid to strip the old tin off; tomato sauce does the same thing at a slower process.
6) To help keep the "fresh polished" look we use two products. First the polish "Wenol", it
comes in a red tube, a little goes a long way with this product. Next we use the polish
"Wrights", we like the "brass polish" for copper items. We prefer the liquid form.
